“We all know of cases where patients have proved legitimate medial use are unlikely to make it to court, and if they do, these cases are consistently dropped. This is most notably true whereby a patient presents at court with a condition and is in receipt of a private prescription. There is currently no way of identifying these people before emotional stress has been caused and public sources have been wasted. This was an opportunity to create a benchmark for change. Together we can officially decriminalise, for those most vulnerable, as we greatly reduce the possibility of obtaining a conviction” (Carly Barton, Cancard).
The Cancard (issued by Cancard Ltd), gives people with specified medical conditions a level of protection when using cannabis medicinally. Applicants must produce medical records to support their application (with or without their doctor’s support). Although cannabis use remains illegal in the UK, unless prescribed through official routes, the Cancard is evidence that a cardholder has a qualifying condition for which medical cannabis may be prescribed.
Cancard is an indication to law enforcement and the general public that a person possessing cannabis is doing so for medicinal reasons. Police forces in the UK have been briefed on Cancard by the National Police Chiefs, who counsel that police officers should feel confident in using their discretion when encounter a Cancard holder in possession of small quantities of cannabis for medicinal purposes.
The Cancard App
The Cancard app, available from Google Play, enables you to show the police, or any third party, that you are using cannabis for medicinal purposes and that you are a registered medical cannabis user.
The Cancard is a validated indication to the police, or any third party, that you are consuming cannabis for medicinal reasons.
Many different organisations support the Cancard, including the police, politicians, political parties, and more (see below).
